Hello Kate
For years now I have researched my Family's heritage in the hope of finding information on my Grandfather's two brothers and sister. Joseph, William and Caroline Wong). My Great grandfather was Pow Wong a gold miner from Linton Victoria, he married Elizabeth Glover and had four children the youngest, Victor James was my grandfather. My grandfather was raised by his Aunt, another Glover sister (Catherine) who also married a Chinese man (Yean). Both Elizabeth and Pow Wong are buried in the Linton Cemetery.

I posted an article on the Ballarat Genealogy Society Web site a few years ago and only now recieved an email advising me to contact you.

I have looked through you web site but was unable to find any information regarding my own family connectoins. I would really appreciate your assistance if you have any information I ask that you please contact me.

Regards

Hi Kate,
We have recently found a family member who had 6 illegitimate children to a Chinese man in Queensland between 1890 & 1900.We have also found in National Archives material that the father, Wong Fung, tried to return to Australia in 1903 but with only the male children listed to return with him. Is this something that would suit your project? I would be happy to send birth cetificates and Archive material. We would appreciate if you could offer any avenues we could check to try to find more on this.
Regards, Robyn

Hello,

I am descendant from Yung Sing (William Young Sing) and Emma Mann, daughter of the late John Mann, of Parramatta.

My father commenced family history research in early 1990's, in the last 3 years I have continued the research.

I am interested in viewing that original article in the San Francisco Daily Evening Bulletin of 30 August 1862 and the Australian and New Zealand Gazette.

I was sent your link by Ray Poon (Brisbane) back in 2010.
Sorry I haven't contacted you before this.

Yours faithfully,
Claire Faulkner

The Government should make a public apology for the oversight that the Chinese market gardens were not heritage listed many years ago.

Hi Kate

I was interested in your research as I have been tracing my husbands family and like Kate McMannus his Great Grranfather was Yap John Hong, I have managed to find his naturlization papers and have just sent off for his marriage certificate. The Hongs are related on his mother's father's side of the family, but her mother's father was also Chinese Charles Chong who married Caroline Sophia Batterby in 1862 in Mudgee NSW. So there family has strong Chinese connection on both sides

regards

Bronwyn O'Donnell

Dear Kate

I am descended through my mother from John Mann, Chinese immigrant, ‘bushman and shepherd’, from Amoy on his naturalisation certificate, who married Scotswoman Elizabeth Smith in the ‘Presbyterian Church’ , Maryborough Qld on 19/2/1863/000373 and had 8 children: John 1864, James (S5) 1866, Elizabeth 1868, Jessie 1871, Alexander 1874, William 1878, Henry 1883 and George 1885. John Mann died in 1888. (Maryborough cemetery index: MANN John, Gardener). I am descended from his son, James, (a maternal Great Grandfather) . He probably arrived when Queensland was part of NSW (i.e. pre 1859).

I have copy of his naturalisation certificate, pictures of my great grandfather etc if you are interested. I live in Canberra! Greg

Hi,

Wondering if you might be able to help me? My grandmother is a bit of a grey-horse. Not much info is avaible on her in Australia. And what is, is a bit flakey. Though a common theme, is that her father worked in China, and she may have been born there. I suspect both parent were Caucasian, as i never though she looked like she had chinese-stock. I can't find any reference to her in Qld/NSW BMD, so the next option was the check Chinese Records for an o/s birth. She was born around 1910 (d. 1990). Any tips on how i might approach this?, where to start? I presume, no o/s record (BDM) are consolidated in Aust anywhere?

Thx for any help.

Just received the book from USA, and finished it. Stan Hunt was born in China in the same year as my Father was born in New Zealand. The reverse of my Father's life where my Grandfather was born in Zengcheng China.

The journey from China to Hong Kong, the Japanese war, the stories, all relate to the stories told by other refugees who left China around the time of the Japanese War.

It was pleasing to compare notes with Stan and his Father's lives.

Just one thing - his father was a Chan. How did the surname of Hunt come about?

I am most interested in your research on William Ah Ket as my family is connected also. If you do a google search for E R Murray An Oriental Thread you will find the story. My great Grandfather was in the Victorian goldfields at the same time as Ah Ket. I met William's daughter Toylaan last year she is in frail health but was trying to complete her family story. She lives in Sydney. I married Chen Cheng in 1971 and my sister married Shin Koyama in 1980.
